I don't like using anything but the recommended lubricant. Cost you 3 times as much, but I would drain the old stuff out, replace with new, run it a while and then replace that. Others can disagree, as I have no proof that kerosene or anything else will or will not hurt anything, I just don't like the idea. If I have the cover off, I just wipe out whatever remains after draining, the refill with new with no flushing. One problem with flushing is that you are going to loosen some but not all of the crud on the walls of the housing, then more is going to break loose later. If I can't clean it thoroughly, I just leave it alone, except for trying to get all the remaining water out. Yes there is a possibility that the seals will leak.
