I have a 46 W-4 with similar problem. I rebuilt the tractor and painted it, When I put it back together the starter was new. After everything was back together the starter wouldn 't work, I think I have a ground problem where it bolts to the trans housing but it is to much work to remove everything to get the starter back off so I have been crank starting the tractor for over 5 years now. Someday I will have the energy to take it back apart but it starts really easy with the crank now so why mess with it.
