Cub steering question

Started working on my 47 cub steering today. It has about a 1/2 turn of the steering wheel before the wheels move, getting hard to mow in a streight line. The problem seems to be a lot of play in the gear fit of the worm shaft to the worm wheel. It wobels up and down and side to side. Guess it's worn out. Thought of brazeing it in place or JB weld. Than got to thinking that mabe that worm wheel is supposed to slide up and down on the shaft. Anybody have any ideas about a fix? thanks, Craig
