Possibly true. I know of an M with a one-wire alternator that works just fine. I've also heard horror stories about one-wire alternators. Everything from it taking lots of RPM to start the charge excitation, to stories of current leakback when the engine is shut off. I would say it all depends on how the alternator was built. Look up Bob M's wiring diagrams. Wiring a 3-wire alternator is just not difficult. It would be less expensive too.
