FARMALL 400D SMOKING

MY FARMALL 400 DIESEL SMOKES SEVERELY WHEN STARTING ON GAS. IT RUNS WELL ON DIESEL BUT WHEN I SWITCH IT BACK TO GAS I CAN NOT SHUT IT OFF WITH THE KEY I HAVE TO STALL IT. IT APPEARS IT IS STILL INJECTING A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL INTO THE CYLINDERS AFTER BEING SWITCHED TO GAS. ANY OTHER THOUGHTS OR HOW DO I ADJUST FOR THIS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
