Does your tractor have the original belly pump style of hydraulics or is it the live pump with the reservoir under the tank? Actually, the dipstick is not necessary on either system. Basically, if the reservoir runs out of oil before the implement you are using is raised all the way up, you are low on oil, add one quart at a time until things work like you think they should. There are probably more of these old Farmalls without the dipsticks than with them.
