Normally, one side of the light is hooked to switched ignition power, and the other side to the wire from the "A" terminal on the generator to the "GEN" (ARM) terminal on the voltage regulator. When the switch is on, one side of the lamp is powered up, and, since the other lead is hooked to the generator output, if the there is no generator output, the light will be "ON". As the generator begins to charge, and the output comes up to match the voltage fed to the other side of the lamp from the switch, there will no longer be voltage drop accross the lamp, and it will go out.
