putting hydraulic pump on 300U

I took the pump off of my 300U to replace seals and now I'm not sure how to put it back and line up the gears properly. My IT shop manual says to bring up the number one piston on compression and keep turning the engine until the last timing mark lines up with the pointer. Seems like the engine has gone to far past top dead center to fire number one for that setting.Can anybody give me some advice. I've got to get this thing back together before my outdoor shop turns cold and nasty.
