No first gear, or reverse on '52 Super M

I was out using my Super M today and with no warning the tranny decided to lock me out of first gear and reverse. Something was preventing the shifter from sliding over far enough to get first and reverse. All the other gears worked fine with no unusual sounds. I decided to keep working with the machine, and about a 1/2 hour later first gear and reverse came back, and I had no other problems the rest of the day. Should I be concerned that I have shift linkage problems, or was my SM just being a little tempermental today?
