The W-9 is a different animal (read BEAST) unto itself. The was not a FARMALL or row-crop version of the 9 as IH felt this version would not sell because the M was considered very large for its time. Can't put my hands on the specific book right now (loaned out), but this book made a specific point to show the difference in the rear end castings between the smaller standards (W-4 and W-6)and the W-9 with the W-9 having a substantial amount more iron and not just in size. There is additional cross-webbing in the case giving the bull gears (finals) an almost separate compartment. The W-9 had no follow-on Super version, however the WD-9 did starting in 1953 with the Super WD-9 at which time getting its mill popped out to 350 CID from 335 CID. The Super WD-9 was followed up with the 600 and 650 respectively.
