M Farmall engine number questions

I"ve got a Farmall M, missing the serial plate. I think that the engine is not original, but I"m confused between the casting letter on the engine(which appears to be P) should be 1946, but the engine serial stamping is FBKM6xxME (can"t remember exact number, but it"s in the early 600"s). Can anybody help me date the engine? What does the ME at the end mean? Would there be any differences if it is a 1939 that would help me tell (it does have the tall oil filter housing)? Thanks in advance!
