M Top Cover Removal.

I want to pull the top cover on my M. It grinds and will not go into fifth. I figured I'd have a look see. I though the cover would come off easy but I was looking and I see it's more involved than I first though. It looks like the gas tank has to come off, the belt pully drive, battery, steering colum, etc, etc. Are there any tricks I need to know about? Will I be able to just lift the cover straight up with a lift or do I have to look out for something in there? Is there a gasket on the top cover?
