Not real sure on this, but I think a crank grinder uses the flywheel flange to clamp to rather than the center hole in the crank, ensuring that the flywheel is true to the centerline of the mains, but I could be wrong. It seems to me that the 606 uses the same basic setup as the 560 which has a pilot bearing in the flywheel not the crankshaft to stabilize the front of the clutch shaft. I know of no other purpose for that tapered hole other than to do the machining necessary for the flywheel flange prior to the actual line grinding on the main bearing surfaces of the crankshaft.

Maybe someone else can add more.
