Give it a LITTLE ether when it starts sputtering to confirm it is not a coil or condenser acting up.

I'm assuming it is not putting out black smoke indicating it is flooding.

It also could be a piece of trash floating around in the fuel tank. On more than one occasion I've seen organic debris plug the fuel opening only while the tractor is running.

Make sure the fuel cap is vented. Try a run test with the cap off.
