856 Diesel injection pump

My 856 , operated by a hired man,ran out of fuel .( Yes, the guage works. )He immediately shut it off as it began to die. He added fuel and it started without venting the system. Used the tractor to blow about 15 loads of silage. When throttle was pulled back to idle after the last load, the engine shut off and would not restart. Hired man told me it had nearly shut off several times when he throttled down between loads. I vented the system per operators manual and had a full flow of fuel to the pump but engine would not start. Quit for the day and tried it next morning. Did not start after venting the system again and trying a shot of ether. No smoke of unburned fuel came out exhaust as usually does for a few seconds on a cold engine start. Borrowed friends 706 to finish the silo. When time permitted I removed the hood to get at the fuel line connections at the injectors, loosened them and turned engine over until fuel was spurting out at all injector connections, tightened connections, gave it a shot of ether and it finally started. After starting, as throttle is advanced, engine is very slow to rev up to full speed and at times will continue to increase speed beyond where throttle setting should allow.Also when throttled down quickly to idle posistion , engine shuts off but is no problem to restart. Anything you guys can suggest I try , short of removing pump and sending it to repair shop? Was pump damaged that quickly from running out of fuel? Tractor had this rebuilt pump on it when purchased wih 2900 hrs. in 1987. Now has 5664 hrs. Do Roosa Master pumps have a life of only 2500 - 3000 hrs.? Thanks for any suggestions . Weldon
