Maybe someone else has better info, but i believe the normal stepped piston has a raised area on the top of the piston that looks like the opposite of the depression in the head. The �fire-crater� had a step but also had a semi-circle area in the step that formed a �crater� in the top of the piston in the step where the spark plug is located.

I have fire-craters in my �M� and run either an alcohol blend or regular gas in it with no problems. While you have the head off, I would suggest checking the exhaust seats to make sure that they have been replaced with the hardened ones that are designed for lead free fuel.
