Cam and gear may be the same, but lots of parts are changed from original in these old tractors. All cams for the engine series M trough 450 will interchange and work. Only a look at the # on parts will tell if its the exact same. For the cam gear look at the part # and suffix on gear. The 49 M would come with a gear # ending in D originaly. Look for one with end # DA or DB they are stronger built to help on breakage. Front cover on the 49 M will have a different bolt pattern where ignition drive bracket or some live hydraulic pumps bolt on than your SM. Depending on what pump you have it may or may not work. Some hydraulic pumps with a place on shaft for a hour meter drive gear will contact some early covers inside before mounting face is flush. Unless your cam is damaged you may be able to keep it. Just in case you dont know the oil pump needs removed to remove cam. Also don't knock cam toward rear of engine because there's a exspantion plug in rear of block that if moved could leak.
