IH 1100D pickup

I am working on a pickup for a friend. It is a 1970 IH 1100D pickup. It has a 304 V8 engine. The problem is that it is so cold blooded. You have to let it warm up for a long time before you put it into gear. If you dont, it just dies and keeps dying until its warmed up. It also doesn't like to start very well. I have put new points and condensor, coil, and spark plugs on it, but I have not retimed it. I have not worked on a international pickup before so I am not very familiar with them. Is there anyway I can improve, or complete fix these two problems?
