I agree. If they're damaged or too small, you might not be getting a connection suitable for the high current requirements of a starter. Here's a story for you. ;) I have a 1980 pickup truck for use around the farm, and when the battery died, I jumped it with a spare battery and "heavy duty" cables...it wouldn't even turn the engine. My mechanic friend suggested I install the battery properly, which I was skeptical about, but decided to try. Sure enough, it worked fine. I still can't believe the pointy teeth of the cables gripping soft lead weren't enough to do anything more than power the dome light. Good luck. ffolkes
