mmman: If you want to see how the sliders are lining up, remove the 3 - 3/8 bolts that hold the gear shift lever pedestal, will give you good view of sliders as well as seeing if end of shift lever is worn. The shift lever end should be a rectangle that just nicely fills the notch in one slider, should be slightly rounded on corners. I like to rebuild them a bit over size and grind until transmission shifts smoothly. Just looking at Allan's post, one question. Does this also happen in neutral? One also has to think of pilot bearing, clutch disc, presure plate, etc. Another item, these tractors are starting to get some real age on them compared to when I owned one. The transmission drive shaft runs inside the Independant PTO drive shaft. Could the PTO drive be turning the transmission in put shaft. I've never seen it but it is something to think about.
