International 434 - gearbox problem

I have a problem with a Inter 434 diesel tractor I own. In operation it appears to drop out of gear and comes to a stop, even though the gear and high/low range is still engaged. The tractor has a gear splitter (lever located on the left just under the steering wheel) this is in addition to the normal high low range selector. It appears this is the cause of the problem.
Gear or range selected make no difference to the problem. Some times it works fine and other times it will not. Clutch slippage is not the answer as it has just been rebuilt and the problem existed prior to this rebuild.
Any one had a similar case and is the problem easily fixed?
