You remove the steering shaft, not the column.
Take out the large cast nut in front of the shaft & disconnect the shaft at the universal joint. Clean the shaft and smooth the joint end so it will not cut the seal on the way out. It's full length has to pass through the seal & bushing on its way out the front. Good idea to replace the seal when the shaft is out.
