Mine does the same thing, I thought it was the hydraulics, as it subsides when the lever is moved. Just got this tractor, part of my procedure is to change the fluid, as it has water in it. I'll have to engage the pto to see if that helps, but mine doesn't sound like gear noise, more like hydraulic whine. The TA does work, I'm really not eager to split the thing in case something is wrong.
