I dont remember exactly cause it has been about 15 yrs since our 656 was apart. It seems like I remember that there is some sort of shock compensating disk mounted off the flywheel. It is spring loaded and works on a friction basis and wears out over time. When it starts slipping, as mine is doing now, the tractor wont pull. Split the tractor and replace it if thats it. Of course it could be hydraulic as well. I dont have my service manual handy either but I know that I&T makes a pretty comprehensive manual as well the IH reprint is available. They explain the system tests.
