Dan � Problem could be as simple as the breaker point gap set too close. If you haven�t already, pop open the distributor and reset the points to 0.020�. Or better yet install a new set of points.

If that doesn�t help the problem could be the distributor needs a rebuild as you suggest (worn bearings, stuck or broken centrifugal advance, etc).

Another, long shot possibility: A sheared camshaft drive gear key or broken cam gear hub. I�m not familiar with the timing gear setup on the C engine so it may not even be possible. However I have seen this several times on H�s and M�s equipped with live hydraulics. Depending on how much the cam gear slips the engine will still run, but will run very poorly and have no power. Only solution is to open the front of the engine and replace the failed component(s).
