I had a similar rust-out on my Super C grill. Seems like the perfect place for old wet bird nests to accumulate. My hole was not quite that big, but I backed it up with aluminum foil and used bondo on the front, several applications. Sanded out and painted, it looks new. I like Scotty"s idea of using the fiberglass mesh as the backup material.
