With diesels, 1/64" (the width of the injector pump hash mark) will make a world of difference.

But, like you say if it is running straight and true at WOT, then I doubt if this is your problem area.

However, if the timing is set just a hair too fast, she will do a slow "lope" at wide open throttle and you'll usually see a little bit of grey in the exhaust too.
