Thanks for the replies so far. It is the FILTER
cap that has a small crack. I'm pretty sure the
pressure really is too high, because the
gauge pegs out for a while after starting, then
later falls back to the normal range. I guess
it's possible the gauge is faulty, but it reads
normal after the leaking stops.

Yeah, the gasket is being replaced with the
filters. We've picked an independent
mechanic's brain and a shop manager at our
local IH dealer, and the relief valve was the
only theory they had.

Thanks again, and I'll post anything I discover
and/or try.
