IH 444 diesel stuck in reverse

Hi I'm new to this board and hope I can find some help. I just bought this 1970 IH444 diesel. Everthing was fine until about an hour ago when something strange happened. I had been driving around in first gear slowly. I stopped to engage the PTO. After I did the tractor would not move at all, but sort of bogged down when I tried to release the clutch. When I put the shifter into what appears to be neutral, the tractor moves in reverse. I can't get it into any other gear. The pto seems to engage and disengage normally.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
