Carb drip hole

I have a '45 M and am rebuilding the carb. There is a hole in the bottom of the bowl. The I&T manual calls it a "drip hole" and shows to be some kind of packing in it. There is no packing in there. What should be in this hole? Would a wad of steel wool work? I would think you need something in there so its not just sucking in dirt.
