Farmall tractor paint

I have searched the discussion forums for this question, but have not come up with an answer.I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the F series tractors being painted with red or grey paint. No one around me knows why, even the old timers I know that use to work at an IH dealer in town in the 50's. I have a 1938 F-14 with steel I am getting ready to work on, and I am pretty sure it should be red, but why were some grey? Thanks for any response you give.
