504 clutch problem

I put in a new clutch and pressure plate during my 504 gas rebuild project. I have run out of adjustment room on the treaded rod travel. I am able to shift gears easy enough and do most work with the tractor except for one problem. When the tractor is under tension,say when using a back blade and pushing dirt into pile. I stop and try and shift to a foward gear I can not shift unil I release the tension, say tow the tractor aheat slightly. The same for moving foward and under tension I can not shift into reverse. What did I miss during the clutch rebuild? Oh, I do not have any prior history on the tractor, I bought it in the not running condition.
