You should never, I repeat NEVER find anything in your oil pan except dirty oil. Pop that pan off and find out what is going on. It is possible that someone put shim stock behind one of the crankshaft bearings rather than get the correct bearing or grind the crankshaft to get the correct clearance and this may have worked out somehow. It could also be a plate or part of washer that is used to lock the main and/or connecting rod bolts to keep them from getting loose.

At any rate pull the pan and find out what is going on. My 2 cents…
