Shep: As most of the others said the fenders were an option. They certainly didn't keep dirt off you. I have heard tell of several people being injured by the fenders getting on and off the tractor. I have never heard tell of anyone falling off because of no fenders. I know you are and Oliver man and must admit most of the fenders on row crops of that era, other than Farmall did keep the dirt off operator somewhat. The worst dirt problem I recall was rear tire going into a rut full of water, made by the same tire. The curl of most fenders would catch that, but not a Farmall fender. None of the other makes were any easier to get on and off with fenders, however. Farmers of that era had to hussel, they didn't need the leg injuries created getting on and off fendered tractors.
