Rust Pitted Areas. How to fix?

We are in the process of painting our "M". The hood and grille has some pitted areas due to rust from sitting outside. Can we apply several heavy coats of primer and sand down to fill in the pitted area until smooth? Also, will it be ok to sand in between color coats? We are using IH 1250 red paint. Thanks for your help.
