The link below will take you to cub manuals including wiring diagrams. The 4 positions on the light switch are L (low charge), H (high charge), D (dim lights), B (bright lights). The broken coil is a resister that was switched into the head light circuit for the dim lights. The charge was controlled by the flat resister. normally the field circuit current flows through it to ground. When you turn the switch to H, D, or B, a ground is applied directly to the terminal where the wire is attached to the resister, this raises the charge rated of the generator.
