You may be on the right track with the ring gear, as if it is bad enough it might hold in the starter drive which will in turn keep the solenoid engaged enough to keep the starter running. When the starter was rebuilt was a new starter drive installed? If not, I would try a new one to see if that helps. If not, how bad is the ring gear? I have heated them up with a acetylene torch, removed them and turned them front to back and used them again. This of course requires splitting the tractor. Hope this helps…
