If you have to pull the choke out to make it run good, it's running LEAN. When you took the carb off, you probably stirred up some crud, which is now restricting a jet. It MAY help to note the position of the mixture adjustment screw(s) and open it up, say two turns. If this helps, and the crud passes through, you can then return to the original setting. Otherwise, you may have to take the carb off, take it apart, and spray aerosol carburetor cleaner through all the jets and passages, followed by compressed air. If the gasket is not too bad, and you're carefull, you might not even have to buy a gasket (or kit).
