Casting date on transmission cover

I have several Farmall M tracors. Some for parts, some to use, and one to restore. Why is the casting date on the transmission cover sometimes on the right side where your foot goes and sometimes it is located right behind where the shift lever goes in. Is this just a different facotry they were made at? Also, Is the serial number on the motor suppose to match the serial number on the block? None of them do. All but two the tractors have the two serial numbers within 1000 of each other.
