Same thing happened to me, only with a Torque Flyte tranny. Darned thing just wouldn't shift.

Come to find out, a prior mechanic had pulled a used output shaft from the salvage yard.

After a bit of diagonising and running oil pressure tests, I finally took 'er down & found that the mud daubbers had blocked off the governor oil feed passage running up the center of that shaft.
