When you check compression, be sure that the throttle is wide open and the plugs are all removed. Tuck the coil to cap wire under a cap clamp and be sure the battery is fully charged. If someone has changed the Schrader valve core on the business end of the tester and put in a standard tire valve core, you will get very low readings. Get the correct (compression tester core) one from an auto supply store.
Test all cylinders dry and then squirt 3-4 pumps of oil in each cylinder, spin the engine several times and retest again. If the pressure rises quite a bit in each cylinder, then you have a cause for ring replacement.
Locate a good cylinder leak-down tester and use it to do a much better job of determining where your engine is loosing compression.
