The first step would be to make sure it is adjusted correctly. The adjustment is detailed and requires an owner's manuel or service manuel. If the TA slips in low range, stops when you shift the lever back, it is usually caused by the ramp and roller being bad. If it slips in the high side it is generally the ta clutch slipping. Since yours will not go into the low range my guess would be that the ta clutch plate is stuck or sticking. Perhaps it will owrk in 5th because ther is more pressue against it. There is a plate on top of the ta section, ahed of the belt pully. If you take the cover off you can look in on the ta clutch and may be able to see if that is the problem. Otherwise maybe if you try it under load and pull the lever back it might come loose. Of course when it does part of the lining may stay attached to whatever it is stuck to. I am not sure how much work you can do through the plate on top of the ta. The TA pressure plate is similar to the main clutch plate in that you can put some bolts in from the back to hold the plate under pressure, then remove the 3 bolts that hold it to the "flywheel or driven surface. The service manuel describes this procedure. If you can release the pressure plate you should be able to get the clutch plate loose. Let us know how it goes.
