The direction depends on user preference. I see a lot of them pointed to the left or right. If you are pulling with it then some organizations specify that it can not point towards the spectators. I have seen some where they bring the stock diameter pipe up past the tin and then have the 5" stack welded to the end of that. It would probably look a little better if the tin was cut but then not everybody wants to do that either. Again. Just personal preference.
