I would suggest taking a compression test first. If the compression is close on all four cylinders, try a different spark plug wire on the #2 cylinder. If it still misses try a different distributor cap.

If the #2 cylinder compression is over 20% lower than the other three you have a compression leak which probably will be related to the exhaust valve. (If you are hearing �popping� in the air cleaner, that indicates it is an intake valve.) Check the valve lash on the #2 cylinder. If that is correct you may have a valve that is starting to "burn" and may only be able to notice it under a hard load.
