FWIW: I have SH 24168 that has the big holes I have another SMTA that has a cultivator bracket but it attaches to the small holes. I have a neighbor with a SM that has the flats but no holes punched. I believe the later SM grills with the flats were a transitional part to make the change over from SM to SMTA easier. It was probably done to reduce storage space requirements at the assembly plant. They could stock one grill to fit two models. The holes were probably punched somewhere near the assembly line during the transition. I have never understood the big holes. There is nothing behind the grill holes that could receive a stabilizer rod or bolt.
