I'm not going to pretend to know the answer to your question, but I will tell you that I have a '49 M and a late '52 SM. With identical mufflers, under similar loads or just running with no load, the M is louder, and always has been. Both have M&W overbore kits.

On a similar note, when I was a kid, my uncle had a Farmall H. We had one also, and even with the same type of muffler, his had a distinctly different sound to it. I always supposed it might have been because ours had the distillate, or low compression head.
