Broken H governor spring, bodge ?

The governor spring on my H broke today. Lucky, the dealer was still open, had 3 on hand, and they were only $6(!) a piece. An hour later it was back at work. If it had been Saturday afternoon, what then ? Steal one off the porch glider ? Is there something that will work in the Dorman box at the hardware store ? Is the length or strength more important ?
