Tommy, the professional paint guys on this site scoff at this, but it was suggested to me to use a product called "Kilz" in a spray can to fill the small rust pits on the sheet metal. It is a stain killer/primer and goes on pretty thick. Apply a coat, let is dry thoroughly, sand it down back to the surface, repeat as necessary to fill the pits and achieve a smooth surface, ready for primer. It worked like a champ for me and some friends of mine. Beats spending the money for new stuff. You have to used the spray-on type, not brush-on. It's available at any hardware store or Walmart.
