With a magneto, it should be easy to time the spark because the impulse coupler "snaps" each time when it fires. Looking at the crank pulley, the single mark should be TDC and the double marks are for spark advance when running at higher engine speeds. Watching rotation when hand cranking, the double marks will show first (advance timing) and then the single mark will appear. Determine where TDC #1 is and then slowly turn the crank while listening for the "snap". I am guessing the timing is late if it starts hard. If the engine seems to fight the starter then timing is too early. Adjust the mag so it 'snaps" at or just after TDC and your engine will be able to start & run just fine.
