Rear axle removal..help!

I have a fluid leak on my right rear axle and I need to remove to replace a gasket? I have taken the 4 bolts loose that seem to hold the axle in place but the axle is not coming out. Do I need to do something else or is the axle in so tight that I need to use the hammer (sledge) wrench??? Please help. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah.. it's on a 1965 Farmall 140. Dean
